The DoEvents has to be added where the hang up occurs and you may need to add more than one to solve all the problems. Some objects like DataGridView have Paint Events which can cause the object to update quicker if you write your own override event.
Setting the Screen Updating property to false can hide the slow updating, but can also cause the form to appear like it is locked up. You have to experiment with trying different combinations of DoEvent, Paint Events, and Screen Updating to see which works best.
